Which webshop ideas really work for fashion, beauty and lifestyle?

A good webshop idea combines three things: what you sell, who you sell it to, and how you sell it. In fashion, beauty and lifestyle, it's often about proven models, like a subscription to products that run out, refills, made to order, pre-orders, rental or secondhand, tied to a clear group of customers. In the Netherlands, rules like the 14-day cooling-off period, the withdrawal button and the rules for subscriptions help decide which model suits you.
In short
A webshop idea is more than a product: it's also a niche and a way of selling, like a subscription, made to order or rental.
Every model asks something different of your store, from a customer account for subscriptions to a clear delivery time for pre-orders.
Check the Dutch rules before you choose: for made-to-order and personalized products the cooling-off period doesn't apply, for secondhand it simply does.
Torn between two ideas? Book a free call, and we'll look together at which idea best fits your product, your customers and your time.
Anyone looking for webshop ideas usually already has something in mind. A product you miss yourself, a style you recognize everywhere, or a craft you've practiced for years and finally want to bring online. What's often still missing is the form: do you sell it per piece, or does it work better as a subscription, made to order or as a drop?
That question matters more than it seems, because the model decides how your store has to work. A subscription needs a customer account where people can pause it themselves. Made to order needs a product page that asks the right questions. In our work, we first decide what a store needs to say, and only then how it looks. Choosing an idea works in the same order: first the model and the customer, then the store.
How we chose these webshop ideas
This isn't a list of trends. We chose seventeen ideas you can really start in fashion, beauty and lifestyle, and that are easy to build on a Shopify store. For each idea, you'll read who it works for, why it works, what your store needs and, where there is one, which Dutch rule you need to know. We reread those rules in November 2026 at the ACM, the KVK, Ondernemersplein and the official legal texts.
What you won't find: market sizes in billions or growth percentages. They sound convincing, but say little about whether your idea works for your customers. You'll see that faster from your first real buyers.
Product, niche or business model?
The ideas on this list come in three kinds: a product or niche (what you sell and to whom; a niche is a segment of a larger market), a business model (subscription, pre-order, made to order, rental, secondhand) and a channel (online only, or alongside a shop, salon or studio). The strongest stores combine them. A skincare brand with refills and a subscription is one store with three ideas in it. So read the list as building blocks, not as a menu. Which types of webshops there are, you'll read in Types of webshops. Already further along? Then check the start plan below for what still needs to happen.
Good to know in the Netherlands
When you sell online to consumers, a 14-day cooling-off period (bedenktijd) applies, also for secondhand and reduced items. According to the ACM, the Dutch consumer authority, it doesn't apply to products made to the customer's specifications, like a made-to-measure suit, or to products that are clearly personalized, like a wedding ring with a date. For sealed products that need to stay hygienic, it only lapses if you say so beforehand and ship the product sealed. For digital products, only if the customer agrees beforehand and starts downloading.
Since June 2026, a webshop that sells to consumers also has to have a clear withdrawal button (herroepingsknop), which leads to an online page where customers can cancel a purchase. If you sell to other EU countries, a combined threshold of €10,000 a year applies. Above it, you charge the VAT of your customer's country, which you can declare through the OSS scheme.
In Belgium: the cooling-off period and its exceptions come from the same European rules. If you sell to Belgian customers, switch on Bancontact and think of Dutch and French in your store.

01. A subscription to what runs out
Best for: Skincare, hair care, basics and home fragrances
Why it works. Customers don't have to remember when to reorder, and you can better see how much stock you'll need. It only works if your product really runs out at a steady pace.
What your store needs. A choice between one-time purchase and subscription on the product page, and a customer account where people can skip, pause and cancel themselves. Shopify has its own free app for this, Shopify Subscriptions.
Rule in the Netherlands. After the first period, you may renew automatically, if you said so when the customer signed up. After that, the notice period is at most one month, and cancelling has to be possible the same way as signing up, so online.
02. Refills for your core products
Best for: Beauty, body care and fragrance brands with a fixed packaging
Why it works. The first purchase is a beautiful bottle or jar, every next purchase the refill. That gives customers a reason to come back, and you a story about less packaging.
What your store needs. The refill right next to the original, so nobody buys the wrong size, and an explanation of how refilling works.
Rule in the Netherlands. A refill for a cosmetic product is itself a cosmetic. Then the European cosmetics rules apply, with a responsible person and a notification in the CPNP portal before you sell.
03. Sets, routines and samples
Best for: Skincare, perfume and brands with products that belong together
Why it works. A routine helps customers who don't know where to start, but sets only really work when you show why these products go well together. Expertise in your niche builds customer trust. Samples lower the barrier for products you can't smell or feel online.
What your store needs. Sets with a clear reason ("morning routine for dry skin"), not just a discount. Shopify Bundles is a free app from Shopify for selling products together.
Good to know. If you ship sealed personal care products, say beforehand that the cooling-off period lapses once the seal is broken. Without that notice, the cooling-off period simply applies.
04. Made to measure and made to order
Best for: Clothing, jewelry and accessories made to measure
Why it works. You only make once something is ordered, so you have no stock sitting around. Made to order is often also more practical when it's a good product that's small or light, because shipping then stays simpler and cheaper than with heavy or fragile items.
What your store needs. A product page that asks the right questions for each item at the moment doubt comes up: sizes, materials, a size guide, extra fields and an honest delivery time. How to build one is in What makes a product page that sells?
Rule in the Netherlands. For products made to the customer's specifications, like a made-to-measure suit, the cooling-off period doesn't apply. A choice from fixed sizes and colors isn't automatically made to measure, so check per product whether it falls under this exception, and put it on the product page.
05. Personalization: engravings, initials and names
Best for: Jewelry, leather goods and gifts
Why it works. A name or date turns a product into a gift, and sets you apart from the same product elsewhere.
What your store needs. An input field on the product page with an example of the result, a character limit and a clear extra delivery time.
Rule in the Netherlands. According to the ACM, the cooling-off period doesn't apply to products that are clearly personalized, like a wedding ring with a date. Say so beforehand, so your customer knows before checking out.
06. Pre-orders and drops
Best for: Fashion brands with collections and brands that want to test first
Why it works. With pre-orders, you see what sells before you have it produced. A drop, a limited collection on a fixed date, gives your followers something to look forward to.
What your store needs. A pre-order button with the expected delivery date next to it, and a sign-up for anyone who doesn't want to miss the drop.
Rule in the Netherlands. The ACM expects you to state the delivery time clearly and keep to it. If you don't make it, you inform the customer, who may then cancel the purchase and get their money back right away.
07. Secondhand and vintage
Best for: Established fashion brands that take back their own pieces, and curators with their own style
Why it works. If you take back your own products, you show that your quality lasts, and you reach customers who don't want to pay the full price yet. A vintage store sells a selection and a taste.
What your store needs. For each item, its condition, your own photos and real measurements in centimeters, and sold-out pieces shown or hidden neatly.
Rule in the Netherlands. If you buy from private individuals, you can use the margin scheme (margeregeling): you charge VAT on your profit margin instead of on the sale price, and put "bijzondere regeling - gebruikte goederen" (special scheme, second-hand goods) on the invoice. The 14-day cooling-off period also applies to secondhand.
08. Renting out clothing and accessories
Best for: Party wear, designer bags and children's clothing
Why it works. For a wedding or gala, not everyone wants to buy something they'll wear once. Rental makes expensive pieces accessible, and you earn several times from the same item.
What your store needs. A calendar with available dates, a deposit and clear agreements about cleaning, damage and late returns. That goes beyond a regular product page, so plan an app or custom work for it.
Good to know. Put your agreements about deposit and damage on the product page and at checkout, not only in your terms and conditions.
09. Your shop and your webshop together
Best for: Boutiques and concept stores with a physical shop
Why it works. Your regular customers already know you, and the webshop lets them buy from you outside opening hours too.
What your store needs. One stock for shop and webshop, which you can keep up by hand but in practice more often run through software once you want to connect both, in-store pickup, and a page with your address and opening hours. With Shopify POS, you sell in the shop from the same system.
Good to know. The legal cooling-off period applies online, not in the shop. Explain that difference in your returns policy.
10. A salon or studio that also sells products
Best for: Salons, studios and practitioners with their own favorites or their own line
Why it works. Your customers already trust your advice. A webshop makes it easy to buy the products you recommended after a treatment or workshop.
What your store needs. A clear separation between booking and shopping, without it feeling like two websites. Also make sure customers can reach you by email with questions after a treatment or purchase. Workshops on a fixed date can be sold as tickets.
Rule in the Netherlands. For services where you agree on a date or period, there's no cooling-off period. For the products in your webshop, there is.
11. Gift boxes and corporate gifts
Best for: Lifestyle and beauty brands that are good at curating and styling
Why it works. Many people are looking for a gift, not a product. A curated box takes that choice off their hands, and businesses often order several at once.
What your store needs. Shopping by occasion or budget, a card with your own message, gift wrapping as an option, and a quote form for business orders.
Rule in the Netherlands. The cooling-off period and the withdrawal button apply to consumers. With business customers, you make your own agreements in the quote and your terms.
12. A niche that's underserved right now
Best for: Business owners who notice themselves that something is missing, like a size, a hair type or a skin tone
Why it works. People who don't feel seen anywhere are actively looking for a solution or an offer that's missing elsewhere, and stay loyal once someone gets it right. With a sharp, distinctive niche, you better address specific needs, face less competition and attract loyal customers faster, without having to take on large webshops right away or compete on price.
What your store needs. Language and images your customers recognize themselves in, and filters that match how they search. A micro-niche makes targeted marketing easier and also helps you build a closer community.
Good to know. Start with conversations with real customers, not with a keyword list. Their words later become your best product copy.
13. A skincare brand with its own formulas
Best for: Makers with their own formula or a reliable supplier or manufacturer who produces for them
Why it works. Skincare runs out and gets bought again, so it fits well with subscriptions, sets and refills. A recognizable, strong brand also helps attract the right audience, especially in skincare, where many products look alike.
What your store needs. Room on the product page for ingredients, use, results and questions, and shopping by skin need. If you sell a skincare brand with its own product, that page often also needs more explanation and proof than with an average reseller.
Rule in the Netherlands. For cosmetics, the European Cosmetics Regulation applies: there has to be a responsible person in the EU, and the product has to be notified in the CPNP portal before you sell. A reliable supplier is crucial for your store here. Everything about getting started is in Starting a skincare brand and webshop.
14. Jewelry with help on size
Best for: Fine and demi-fine jewelry, rings and body jewelry
Why it works. Jewelry is compact to ship and often a gift. The biggest doubt online is the size, so whoever takes that doubt away sells more easily.
What your store needs. Sharp photos with zoom, materials per variant, a size guide or ring sizer, and care information.
Rule in the Netherlands. Under the Waarborgbesluit 2019, the Dutch hallmarking decree, jewelry with 1 gram of gold or more, 8 grams of silver or more, or 0.5 grams of platinum or more must carry a recognized hallmark. Lighter pieces are exempt.
15. Art, prints and art jewelry
Best for: Artists, photographers, illustrators and galleries
Why it works. Originals, prints and commissions in one store give you different prices for different buyers, from a first print to an original.
What your store needs. Photos that do the work justice, dimensions and materials, a page per artist or series, and sold works that stay visible.
Good to know. How to price and ship art, and which VAT applies, is in Selling art online in the Netherlands.
16. Wholesale alongside your own webshop
Best for: Brands that also sell to boutiques, salons or concept stores
Why it works. You sell directly to consumers and at the same time in larger quantities to shops. Two kinds of customers, one range.
What your store needs. A private area where business customers log in, with their own prices, minimum quantities and ordering on invoice. More in B2B webshop.
Rule in the Netherlands. The cooling-off period and the withdrawal button are there for consumers. A webshop that only sells to businesses doesn't fall under them, and so needs clear terms all the more.
17. Digital products alongside your physical products
Best for: Stylists, makeup artists and makers with knowledge to share
Why it works. You don't send a style guide, online masterclass or sewing pattern by post, so there are no shipping costs and no stock.
What your store needs. Automatic delivery after payment, a clear description of exactly what the customer gets, and a place to find it again later.
Rule in the Netherlands. The cooling-off period only lapses once the customer agrees beforehand and starts downloading or streaming. If you sell in other EU countries, digital services count towards the €10,000 threshold.
How do you choose the right webshop idea?
There's no idea that's best for everyone. The right idea fits your product, the people who buy it and the time you have each week. Hold your two or three favorites up against these questions:
Do customers come back? If your product runs out, subscriptions, refills and sets fit. If people buy it once, you'll get more from gifts, personalization or a strong niche.
How much stock do you want to buy up front? Pre-orders, made to order and digital products need little stock. Vintage and rental need pieces you first have to find.
How much explanation does your customer need? The more doubt, the more important your product page. With skincare, made to order and jewelry, that's more work than with basics.
How trend-sensitive is your idea? Also look at what customers will soon expect from a brand as standard. Sustainable products are popular in 2026 and for many consumers even an expectation, not just an extra plus.
Which rule comes with it? A rule isn't a reason to drop an idea, but it does decide what has to be on your product page and in your terms.
Can you test it first? A pre-order, a waiting list or conversations with five to ten people from your audience show whether there's demand, before you have a lot made.
What it costs to open and which steps there are, from the KVK to payment methods, is in Starting a webshop in the Netherlands. Want to sell your own brand directly to customers? Then What is DTC? explains what that asks of you. Whichever idea you choose, a good marketing strategy needs SEO and social media in any case.
Build it yourself, a template, or a strategy first?
Build it yourself. With a free Shopify theme and the apps from this list, you can go a long way, especially for a first test or a new store. With user-friendly software and templates, you can put a first store online in no time. It mostly costs your own time, and thanks to a free trial you can often test calmly first what suits you.
A template or freelancer. Faster and neater than doing it yourself, and good when your model is simple, like single products with a few sets. This often also fits when you have little technical knowledge and want to set up your store in a practical, clear way.
Strategy first, then design. Makes sense when your model asks for more, like subscriptions, made to order, rental or several languages, or when your brand really has to stand out. Then you first decide who buys and what they need to see, build the store around that, and make sure that setup also fits how you'll attract visitors through SEO and social media. Paid ads can be an extra channel to bring in visitors faster. You can also become visible faster with Google Shopping, for example, if your offer and product data are set up for it.

A background in product design. Before starting Design by Karina, I worked in product design at Uber, where I helped shape payment experiences for drivers.
Fewer projects, more care. We work on a limited number of projects at a time, so I'm closely involved in every project.
We say it straight. If a free theme and a few good tweaks are enough for your store, we'll tell you.
Launch is the starting line. After launch, we keep improving your store based on what real visitors do.
What does it cost to have your webshop idea built on Shopify?
How we work | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|
The Launch | €4,500 | Your first proper store, with your brand applied to a proven Shopify theme, a sitemap you approve before design begins, and 30 days of support |
The Atelier | €6,900 | An established brand that wants a store designed around that brand, not a template with a logo on it |
Bespoke | €9,500 | Larger stores with several languages or markets, subscriptions, B2B pricing or a large catalog |
Growth Plan | €590 a month | A store that's already live. Every month we pick the improvement that makes the most difference, make it and show you what it did. At least three months. |
If your idea calls for subscriptions, made to order or rental, your quote shows which apps or custom work that takes, with the reason. If you're moving to Shopify from another platform, the migration comes as an add-on in your quote.
Webshop ideas: the short version
Good webshop ideas combine a product, a niche and a way of selling that fit together logically. Choose based on whether customers come back, how much stock you want to buy and how much explanation your customer needs, because that match is exactly what improves your chances of a profitable store. Check the rule that comes with your model: no cooling-off period for real made-to-order and personalized products, but there is one for secondhand, a notice period of at most one month for subscriptions, and since June 2026 a withdrawal button in every webshop that sells to consumers. Test your idea, and then build the store that fits that model.
What we see with clients
When business owners come to us with an idea, the conversation is often about the product first, and only later about how they want to sell it. Yet it's that second question that decides what the store needs to be able to do. We also see that sectors have developed faster in recent years once repeat purchases or a recurring need are part of the model. A subscription, made to order or a collection in drops each needs a different product page, a different customer account and different agreements. When that's clear from the start, the rest of the project gets a lot calmer.

Questions
What is a good idea for a webshop?
A good idea combines a product you know well, your own passion or interest, a clear group of customers and a way of selling that fits that product. In fashion, beauty and lifestyle, that's for example subscriptions to products that run out, refills, made to order, pre-orders, secondhand, or a webshop alongside your shop or salon. Good webshop ideas often grow within a clear sector, as long as you choose an even sharper niche or customer problem within it.
Which webshop ideas are good for beginners?
Ideas with little stock up front: pre-orders, made to order, digital products or a first drop. That way you see whether people buy before you put a lot of money into stock. Beginners often first look at which popular products already have traction on marketplaces, Marktplaats and Google Trends, and where new trends are emerging, before they choose; signals like these can help you build a successful store faster.
What can I sell online without a large stock?
With pre-orders and made to order, you only make something in your webshop or **own online store** once it's ordered. Pet products, for example, are an interesting category with loyal customers and repeat orders. Digital products like a style guide have no stock at all. **Dropshipping** is also an option if you don't want to hold stock in your own shop. Do state the delivery time clearly and keep to it; on the other hand, it's not only little stock that counts, but also how predictable demand is.
Can I refuse returns for made-to-order or personalized products?
Yes, according to the ACM, the cooling-off period doesn't apply to products made to the customer's specifications or that are clearly personalized, like a wedding ring with a date. A choice from fixed sizes or colors isn't automatically made to order. Mention the exception beforehand.
Which rules apply to a subscription in my webshop?
You may renew automatically after the first period if you said so when the customer signed up. After that, the notice period is at most one month, and a subscription taken out online must also be possible to cancel online.
What is the withdrawal button, and do I need one?
Since June 2026, a webshop that sells to consumers has to have a clear button with which customers can cancel a purchase online. If you only sell to businesses, this obligation doesn't apply.
Can I start a webshop alongside my shop or salon?
Yes, and your regular customers are then often your first buyers. Work with one stock for shop and webshop, for example with Shopify POS, and explain clearly in your returns policy that the cooling-off period applies online and not in the shop. A good webshop here also depends on one stock, clear opening hours and clear copy about returns and pickup.
What does it cost to have a webshop made for my idea?
That depends on your model and how much needs to be custom. With us, The Launch starts at €4,500, The Atelier at €6,900 and Bespoke, among other things for subscriptions, several markets or B2B pricing, at €9,500. On top of that, you pay your Shopify plan and any apps.
What is the best Shopify agency in Rotterdam?
That depends on what you need: some agencies are strongest in development, others in design or marketing. We're one of the options: Design by Karina is a boutique Shopify agency in Rotterdam that starts with your brand and your business model, and designs the store around them.
