Introduction: what do we mean by 'website store' in 2026?

Website stores are more than a row of products on a page. A modern website store combines brand experience, conversion optimization and technical infrastructure in one platform. This article compares real platforms and setups for brands in fashion, beauty and lifestyle, plus service businesses that don't have an online store (yet).

Online shopping offers convenience and saves time: online stores are open 24/7, there are no crowds or queues, and home delivery saves travel time and parking costs. Customers can compare prices and products at their leisure, reviews from other customers are available right away, and shopping discreetly is easier on online platforms. Online stores often have a bigger range than physical shops and offer exclusive online discounts. Those advantages make choosing the right platform directly decisive for your revenue and brand position. At Design by Karina, we work with different kinds of website stores every day, and based on that we made this practical selection.

How we selected the best website stores

We started with a longlist of platforms: Shopify, WooCommerce, headless solutions, Framer and hybrid setups. Then we filtered on use in the Netherlands, Belgium and Europe, and on relevance for small and medium-sized brands with serious growth plans. Webador and Shopify are popular ecommerce platforms in Europe, but we look wider.

Main selection criteria

  • Conversion & UX: how quickly and pleasantly customers buy something; mobile-first, checkout flow, loading speed.

  • Brand experience & design freedom: unique design versus standard templates; crucial for popular brands in fashion and lifestyle.

  • Scalability & performance: how the store performs during new drops, Black Friday or international growth.

  • Ecommerce features: product management, variants, subscriptions, bundles, loyalty programs.

  • Technical SEO: URL structure, speed, indexability.

  • Management & ease of use: can founders change content and collections themselves?

  • Costs & TCO: licenses, transaction fees, app costs, development hours.

  • Support & ecosystem: documentation, apps, partners in the Netherlands.

The 5 best website stores for growing brands

Our analysis came up with five favorites, each with its own sweet spot. This isn't a sponsored list; it's based on our experience with projects. Design by Karina specializes in Shopify, but we say honestly when another platform fits better.

1. Shopify (with custom design)

In 2026, Shopify is the most complete platform for direct-to-consumer brands in Europe. In the Netherlands there are about 67,900 Shopify stores, a growth of 13% in one year. About 76% of Shopify stores pass all Core Web Vitals on mobile, according to the HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025.

Best choice for: growing brands that want to go live quickly without a template look. Think fashion labels, beauty brands and premium DTC.

Pros:

  • Scalable hosting; ready for launches and Black Friday

  • Checkout with Apple Pay, iDEAL, Klarna, Bancontact and PayPal

  • An app ecosystem for reviews, loyalty, email automations, subscriptions

  • A good foundation for technical SEO and mobile-first UX

  • Design freedom through custom themes, sections and headless options

Limitations: monthly costs plus app fees add up. The back-end logic gives less freedom than open source. Work out international fees through Shopify Payments carefully.

2. WooCommerce (WordPress)

WooCommerce stays interesting for content-driven brands. With about 98,500 stores in the Netherlands, it's still the most used platform, although that number is falling by 10% a year. The choice between WordPress and Shopify depends on your priorities.

Best choice for: service businesses and business owners who already have a WordPress website and want to add a simple shop. Low entry costs, strong blog integration.

Limitations: only 35% of WooCommerce stores pass Core Web Vitals on mobile. Maintenance, security and plugin updates are recurring costs.

3. Shopify + headless front end (for example with Next.js)

In this setup, Shopify stays the back end, but the front end is fully custom. In 2025 and 2026, bigger DTC brands choose this for maximum loading speed and creative freedom.

Best choice for: brands with lots of visitors a month and international expansion. Labels that work in campaigns, with drops, storytelling and collabs.

Pros: extremely fast loading times, full creative control, several content sources connected to one store.

Limitations: higher development and maintenance costs. Too complex for starters.

4. Framer sites for service businesses without an online store

Framer isn't an online store, but it's a strong website store variant for coaches, agencies and studios that sell leads.

Best choice for: creative studios and consultants who need a professional website with booking flows and forms.

Pros: visually strong, fast hosting, drag-and-drop editing. Ideal for testing campaign landing pages quickly.

Limitations: not suitable for large product catalogs. Vendor lock-in; limited export.

5. WordPress as a content hub + a separate Shopify store

This hybrid solution combines WordPress for rich content (blog, lookbooks) with Shopify for the shop. More and more brands go content-first and choose this combination of design and strategy.

Best choice for: fashion and lifestyle brands that use magazine-style content to tell their story.

Limitations: a more complex setup; needs clear content and development management.

Quick comparison of the best website stores

  • Shopify: best all-round online store for serious ecommerce brands

  • WooCommerce: best for content-first sites with an additional shop

  • Shopify + headless: best for bigger DTC brands with a lot of traffic

  • Framer: best for service businesses that bring in leads and orders through calls

  • WordPress + Shopify: best for brands that combine storytelling and ecommerce

How do you choose the right website store for your brand?

There's no "best" solution; the match depends on revenue level, type of product and growth ambition.

By growth stage: starters often choose WooCommerce or a basic Shopify theme. Growing brands benefit from custom Shopify. Established brands with international ambitions fit headless or hybrid.

By offer: physical products with variants in clothing, shoes and accessories fit Shopify. Service businesses choose Framer with a booking system. A coach who offers an outfit advice service doesn't need a shopping cart.

By branding: brands positioned in the higher segment rarely get away with standard templates. Make the choice consciously: a €300 jacket doesn't sell from a generic theme.

Which website store probably suits you best?

  • Choose Shopify if you want a serious online store that grows with you for 3 to 5 years

  • Choose WooCommerce if you already have a strong WordPress site and are adding a limited shop

  • Choose Shopify + headless if you already sell substantially and want maximum performance

  • Choose Framer if you need a high-end website to present your services and your brand story

  • Choose WordPress + Shopify if your brand leans on editorials and blogs next to a stable shop

A short strategy session with a specialist saves months of mistakes and thousands of euros.

The Dutch online market as context

To understand why choosing the right platform matters so much: the Dutch ecommerce market is mature and competitive. Bol.com started in 1999 and now offers about 73 million items. Coolblue has been one of the biggest Dutch online stores for years. Wehkamp offers more than 400,000 products in categories from clothing to furniture. Amazon launched its Dutch store amazon.nl in 2020 and, as an American platform, has become fully established.

Zalando launched its 'Pre-owned' platform in 2020, which shows that even top online stores keep innovating. If you follow Instagram, you'll see how brands take inspiration from these marketplaces. Marktplaats is the most popular second-hand online marketplace in the Netherlands and was bought by eBay in 2004 for €225 million. Vinted is active in more than 25 countries, including the Netherlands. Facebook Marketplace was introduced in 2016 and has been a fixed part of the second-hand market since.

All of this increases the competition for your items. That's why your own website store, with strong service, a clear story and good design, isn't optional but necessary if you want to stand out among all those online stores.

Final thoughts

The best website store depends on your brand's stage, your ambitions and the time and resources you have. Shopify is the strongest all-rounder for serious ecommerce; WooCommerce fits content-first scenarios; headless solutions pay off at high volumes; Framer works for service businesses; and the WordPress and Shopify combination serves brands that put storytelling at the center. 2026 is a good moment to re-evaluate your platform: consumer behavior is shifting and technology is moving fast. Don't let your current shop or website fall behind the competition. Get in touch with Design by Karina for a no-obligation conversation about the most future-proof choice for your brand.

Questions

When is it time to replace my current online store?

Signs: slow loading times (according to research by Deloitte for Google, a 0.1-second improvement brings up to [8.4% more conversions](https://web.dev/case-studies/milliseconds-make-millions)), limited integrations, difficult management for your team, low conversion or crashes around peak days.

What does a professional website store cost on average in 2026?

With us, a Shopify store on a proven theme starts from €4,500 (The Launch), a store designed for your brand from €6,900 (The Atelier), a larger store from €9,500 (Bespoke) and a Brand Site in Framer from €2,900, one-off. On top of that comes your Shopify plan, from €28 a month (Basic, or €21 a month billed yearly). Headless setups cost more. Ongoing costs (apps, hosting, maintenance) vary by platform.

How long does it take to launch a new website store?

With us: The Launch takes 4 to 5 weeks, The Atelier 7 to 8 weeks. Headless or hybrid setups take longer.

Can I migrate from WooCommerce or Magento to Shopify?

Products, customers and orders can partly be migrated automatically. URL structure, SEO redirects and design changes take manual work. A migration plan prevents you from losing your search rankings.

How important is technical SEO when choosing a website store?

Your choice of platform determines your basic SEO: speed, structure, indexability. Content and link building remain decisive. Design by Karina includes technical SEO as standard in design and development.
