Shopify vs WooCommerce: which one is right for your brand?

Shopify is an all-in-one platform: you pay a monthly plan, and hosting, security, updates and checkout are taken care of. WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress: the software costs nothing, but you arrange hosting, updates, security and extensions yourself. Shopify is usually the better choice when you want to spend your time on the brand. WooCommerce fits when you already run on WordPress and have someone to look after it.
In short
The difference isn't really the price. It's who takes care of the store: Shopify, or you and your developer.
Both support iDEAL, Dutch BTW and the usual Dutch shipping and accounting tools.
Moving from WooCommerce to Shopify is common, and with 301 redirects you keep your Google rankings.

Before you read on: we build every store on Shopify, so you know where we stand. That's exactly why I want this comparison to be honest. WooCommerce is a good platform, and for some brands it's the better one. The question is which one fits how you want to work.
I didn't start in web design. I started in product, helping shape payment experiences for drivers at Uber. One thing it taught me is that the tool is the easy part. What really moves the needle is who you're building for, and what they need to see before they say yes. Both Shopify and WooCommerce can run a beautiful store. The difference is how much of your week goes into the platform instead of into the brand.
What is the real difference between Shopify and WooCommerce?
Shopify is a service. You rent a complete store system: the software, the servers it runs on, the checkout, the security and the updates all come from one company, for one monthly price. You choose a theme, add your products and sell. Whether you call it a Shopify webshop or a Shopify website, it's the same system.
WooCommerce is software you own. It's a free, open-source plugin that turns a WordPress website into a store. You choose where it's hosted, which theme and extensions you add, and you can change almost anything in the code. That freedom comes with the job of keeping it all updated, secure and fast.
So the real question isn't "which one is better". It's "do I want to rent a store that's looked after, or own one I look after myself?"
Want the full picture of each?
We explain each platform on its own in
What is Shopify and how does it work?
and
What is WooCommerce?
. This article is only about choosing between them.
Shopify vs WooCommerce, side by side
Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
What it is | An all-in-one ecommerce platform | A free plugin for WordPress |
Hosting | Included | You choose and pay a host |
Updates and security | Done by Shopify | You or your developer |
Checkout | Shopify's own, fast and familiar to shoppers | WooCommerce's, can be changed freely |
Extra features | Apps from the Shopify App Store, often monthly | Plugins and extensions, often yearly |
Design | Themes, plus custom sections and code | Any WordPress theme, any code |
Content and blog | A simple blog, plus pages | WordPress, one of the strongest tools for content |
Languages and countries | Built in (Shopify Markets) | With extra plugins |
Strongest when | Products are the heart of the business, and you want the store to just work | Content is the heart of the business, and someone technical is on board |
Shopify vs WooCommerce: what does each one cost?
WooCommerce is often called free, and the plugin is. The store around it isn't. Shopify looks more expensive at first, because everything is in one monthly bill. Here are the usual costs, side by side:
Cost | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
The software | Basic €28 / month, or €21 billed yearly. Grow €78, or €59 yearly. | Free |
Hosting | Included | From about €9.99 / month for WordPress hosting, more for a busy store |
iDEAL payments | €0.29 per payment with Shopify Payments | From €0.29 per payment with WooPayments, or your payment provider's rate |
Card payments | 1.9% + €0.25 on Basic | Depends on the payment provider |
Theme | Free, or a paid theme of about $150 to $400, once | Free, or a paid theme, usually once |
Extra features | Apps, often a few to a few dozen euros a month each | Extensions, often $29 to $299 a year each |
Upkeep | Included | Your time, or a developer's hours |
Shopify prices from shopify.com/nl/prijzen, excluding BTW (checked October 2026). WooPayments iDEAL fee from woocommerce.com; extension prices from the WooCommerce Marketplace range; hosting from TransIP's regular price (checked October 2026). Shopify charges an extra 2% on Basic if you use another payment provider instead of Shopify Payments.
For a new brand, the monthly totals often end up closer than people expect. The bigger difference is the time. Every hour spent updating plugins or fixing a conflict after an update is an hour not spent on your products, photos or customers. We broke down every Shopify cost in How much does a Shopify store cost in 2026?
Running it day to day
This is where the two feel most different.
With Shopify, you log in, add products, check orders and change your homepage. Updates happen in the background. If something breaks on Shopify's side, Shopify fixes it. You can't break the server, because you don't have one.
With WooCommerce, you do the same things in WordPress, plus the upkeep: WordPress, WooCommerce, the theme and every plugin get their own updates, and they don't always agree with each other. Backups and security are your job, or your host's, depending on what you pay for.
Neither is hard if it's set up well. The question is who's on call when the store is down on a Saturday morning in December.
Design and flexibility
Both can look exactly like your brand. The way you get there is different:
Shopify works with themes. A good theme gets you far, and custom sections, metafields and code take you the rest of the way. The checkout follows Shopify's layout: you set your logo, colors and fonts, and it behaves like a checkout shoppers already trust.
WooCommerce lets you change everything, including the checkout and how the store works underneath. That's a real advantage for unusual products or business rules, as long as someone can build and maintain it.
In our work, "I need more freedom" usually means "my current theme doesn't show my brand well". That's a design problem, and it's solvable on both platforms. True technical limits on Shopify are rarer than people think, but they exist, and a good partner will tell you when you hit one.
Shopify vs WooCommerce for SEO
Both can rank well. Google doesn't prefer one platform. It prefers fast pages with clear, useful content.
WooCommerce sits on WordPress, which is excellent for content: long articles, categories, full control over every URL and many SEO plugins.
Shopify handles the technical basics for you, like a sitemap, fast hosting and clean product pages. Its URLs follow a fixed pattern (/products/ and /collections/), which you can't change, and which doesn't stop stores from ranking.
If your Google traffic comes mostly from a large blog, take that seriously before you move. If it comes mostly from your brand name and your products, Shopify is rarely a step back.
Selling in the Netherlands: both have what you need
Good to know in the Netherlands
Both platforms support iDEAL, which Dutch shoppers expect at checkout, and both can show prices with BTW and handle EU VAT when you sell abroad. Both connect to the usual Dutch tools, like Sendcloud, MyParcel and PostNL for shipping, and Moneybird or e-Boekhouden for accounting, through apps or plugins. Shopify Payments also offers Bancontact for Belgian shoppers. On either platform, your store must show your KVK number and explain the 14-day right to cancel.
For a store that sells mostly in the Netherlands and Belgium, the platform choice rarely comes down to payments or shipping. It comes down to everything else in this article.
TOOL: PLATFORM QUIZ
When is each one the right choice?
You want to spend your time on products and customers, not on servers and updates. Your products are the heart of the business. You'd like one monthly cost and a checkout shoppers already trust. You plan to sell in more countries or languages.
Your business runs on a large WordPress site with content that ranks well. You have a developer or a technical person on the team. Your products or rules need deep changes to how the store works. You want to own every part of the code.
And sometimes the honest answer is "stay where you are". If your WooCommerce store is fast, looked after and selling well, moving costs money and attention you could spend elsewhere. A platform move makes sense when the platform is in the way, not because another one is popular.
Moving from WooCommerce to Shopify
If you do decide to move, it's one of the most common migrations, and it's very doable. What moves with you:
Products, with their images, variants and descriptions.
Customers, so they can keep buying from you.
Order history, so you can still look up what someone bought.
Your Google rankings, through 301 redirects from every old page to its new address.
Your blog, which can move to Shopify, or stay on WordPress on its own address.
What most founders worry about is Google, which is why every old page gets a 301 redirect to its new address, so the rankings you've built come with you. And the store isn't just copied over: it's rebuilt properly on Shopify. A move is also the best moment to fix what wasn't working, instead of carrying it over.
Before you move, write down
Your top 20 pages in Google Search Console, your monthly orders, and every plugin you use and why. That list becomes the plan: what has to keep working on day one, and what can go.
NOT A TOOL
The platform is the easy part
A beautiful website is a good start. But your Shopify store also needs to communicate your value, guide customers through their choices and make buying feel effortless.

Why founders choose us
Strategy before pixels. Before opening a design file, we want to understand who buys from you and what they need to see first.
A background in product design. Before starting Design by Karina, I worked in product design at Uber, helping shape payment experiences for drivers.
Fewer projects, more care. We limit the number of projects we take on at a time, so I'm closely involved in every one.
We say it straight. If WooCommerce is the better fit for you, or if you should stay where you are, we'll tell you.
Launch is the starting line. After launch, we keep improving the store with what real visitors do.
What does a Shopify store, or a move to Shopify, cost with us?
How we work | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|
The Launch | €4,500 | Your first proper store, or a move from WooCommerce to a Shopify store with your brand applied to a proven theme |
The Atelier | €6,900 | An established brand that wants a store designed for it, not a template with a logo on it |
Migration | €900 | Added to a project: products, customers, order history, redirects and a go-live without downtime |
Growth Plan | €590 / month | A store that's already live. We pick the change that matters most, make it and report back every month, for at least three months. |
The exact migration price depends on how many products you have and how clean the data is, and you'll see every item in your proposal before we start.
The short version
Shopify is a store that's looked after for you, for one monthly price. WooCommerce is a store you own and look after, for a free plugin and a set of costs around it. Both support iDEAL and everything a Dutch store needs. Choose Shopify when you want your time to go to the brand, WooCommerce when content and code are your strength, and stay where you are when your current store is working. If you move, plan the redirects, and rebuild instead of copying.
From the studio
What we see with clients
When founders come to us from WooCommerce, the platform is rarely the first thing they mention. It's the time: the updates, the plugin that stopped working, the developer they have to wait for. The move itself is the part they worry about most, and it's usually the most predictable part of the project, because it follows a plan.
Questions
Is Shopify better than WooCommerce?
Not for everyone. Shopify is usually better when you want the store to just work and your time to go to the brand. WooCommerce is better when you run on a large WordPress site, have technical help and need deep changes to how the store works.
Which is cheaper, Shopify or WooCommerce?
WooCommerce has no software cost, but you pay for hosting, extensions and upkeep. Shopify has one monthly plan, from €21 a month billed yearly, with hosting and updates included. For a new brand the totals are often close. The bigger difference is the time each one takes.
Is WooCommerce really free?
The plugin is free. The store around it isn't: hosting, a theme, paid extensions, payment fees and someone to keep it updated all cost money or time.
Which is easier to use?
Shopify, for most people, because the hosting, updates and security are taken care of. WooCommerce is easy once it's set up well, but you're responsible for keeping WordPress, the theme and every plugin working together.
Shopify or WooCommerce for SEO?
Both can rank well. WordPress is very strong for content and gives you control over every URL. Shopify handles the technical basics for you and uses fixed URL patterns. Google prefers fast pages with useful content, whichever platform they're on.
Does WooCommerce support iDEAL?
Yes, through WooPayments or a payment provider like Mollie. Shopify supports iDEAL through Shopify Payments, at €0.29 per payment.
Shopify or WooCommerce in the Netherlands?
Both work well for Dutch stores: iDEAL, BTW, PostNL, Sendcloud and Moneybird all connect to both. The choice comes down to who looks after the store, how much content you have and how much you want to customize.
Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify?
Yes. Products, customers and order history move with you, and 301 redirects send every old page to its new address. It's one of the most common migrations to Shopify.
Will I lose my Google rankings if I switch to Shopify?
Not if the move is planned. Every old page gets a 301 redirect to its new address, so the rankings you've built come with you. Expect some movement for a few weeks while Google reads the new store.
Can I keep my WordPress blog if I move to Shopify?
Yes. You can move the articles to Shopify's blog, or keep the blog on WordPress on its own address and link it to the store. Which one is better depends on how much traffic the blog brings in.
How much does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration cost in the Netherlands?
It depends on your number of products and how clean the data is. With us, a migration starts at €900, added to a store project like The Launch from €4,500. You'll see the exact price in your proposal before we start.
What is the best Shopify agency in Rotterdam?
That depends on what you need: some agencies are strongest in development, others in design or in marketing. We're one of the options: Design by Karina is a boutique Shopify agency in Rotterdam that starts with your brand strategy, and plans every migration around your Google rankings.
