If you want to choose an ecommerce agency in the Netherlands, first decide whether you need an agency at all: a good Shopify agency combines strategy, design, development and aftercare to design, build and optimize a store that doesn't only look good, but also converts. For founders and owners of independent fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, and for coaches or creative studios who want a store or website that tells their brand story better and supports their growth online, that choice starts with the question of whether an agency, a freelancer or building it yourself fits best.
Then shortlist three agencies whose live stores look like the store you want, and compare their quotes item by item: who does the strategy, what's included, who owns the store and what happens after launch. In this article you'll read where to find agencies, how to select a Shopify agency, how they differ from freelancers, how costs depend on scope, industry, goals, products and audience, and what role ecommerce strategy, UX/UI design, migration to Shopify, conversion optimization and aftercare play. Shopify's Partner Directory, Google reviews and the KVK Handelsregister (the Dutch business register) help you check what they say.
The right choice keeps you from losing time, money and customers to a store that looks good but doesn't convince your customer. Your short answer: choose an ecommerce agency if you need a well-thought-out Shopify store that converts, and you're looking for a partner that looks further than design or development alone.
In short
An agency, a freelancer and doing it yourself can all be the right choice. It depends on your budget, your time and how complex the project is.
The price says little on its own. Compare what's in each quote, line by line, and who does the thinking before the design starts.
Whoever you hire: the store should be in your name, and they work with you through a collaborator account, not your password.
Comparing agencies? Bring your shortlist to a free intro call, and we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit.
Before you read on: we're a Shopify agency ourselves, so you know where we stand. That's exactly why I want this guide to help you, even if you never talk to us. Choosing who builds your store is one of the biggest decisions you'll make for your brand online. And most of the advice about it is written by agencies telling you to choose them.
So here is how I would choose, if I were on your side of the table. I've seen €15,000 websites that don't convert, and stores on a free theme that sell beautifully. The difference was never the price. It was whether someone took the time to understand who buys from the brand, and what those people need to see before they say yes.
Do you need a Shopify agency, a freelancer, or can you do it yourself?
Start here, because it decides everything that comes after. There are three honest ways to get a Shopify store, whether you call it your Shopify store or your Shopify website, and each one is right for someone.
Doing it yourself works when your budget is tight, you enjoy the work and you can spend your evenings on it. Shopify is built so a business owner can start alone: you pick a theme, add products and connect your payments. What you miss is someone looking with you at what your store should say, and which audience you're sharpening it for.
A Shopify freelancer works when you already know what you want and you're looking for someone skilled to build it. Many freelancers are excellent designers or developers. The question is whether they also do the thinking before the design starts, or expect you to bring it.
A Shopify agency, an ecommerce agency that builds on Shopify, works when you want strategy, design, development and care after launch in one place. You then usually work with ecommerce specialists through a collaborator account, not by sharing your password. Or when the project has more moving parts: a migration, several languages, custom features, or a brand that needs to be translated into a store for the first time.
Doing it yourself | Freelancer | Agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
Best when | Your budget is tight, your time isn't | You know what you want built | You want the thinking and the building |
Strategy | You | Sometimes | Usually part of the project |
Design | A theme, as it comes | A theme with your brand, or custom | A theme with your brand, or fully designed for you |
Migration from another platform | Possible, with apps | Depends on the freelancer | Usually, with a plan for redirects |
After launch | You | Often by the hour | Often a monthly plan |
Main risk | Your time, and blind spots | One person, one set of skills | Paying for more than you need |
None of the three is less than the other two. A well-chosen freelancer builds a better store than the wrong agency, and a business owner with a clear story and a good theme can sell more than both. The right choice depends on what you need, what your budget allows and what gives you the best chance of success. With the checklist further down you can compare the quotes you get, whoever they come from.
What does a Shopify agency or freelancer cost in the Netherlands?
Freelancers mostly work by the hour, agencies mostly by the project. That makes quotes hard to compare, so it helps to know the hourly rates behind them.
Who | What it usually costs | Source |
|---|---|---|
Doing it yourself | Shopify Basic €28 a month, or €21 a month billed yearly. A paid theme of about 150 to 400 US dollars, once, or a free theme. | shopify.com/nl/prijzen; Shopify Theme Store |
Freelance designer | On average €72 an hour, excluding VAT. Starters about €61, experienced designers about €76. | Knab Zzp Uurtarievenboekje 2026 |
Freelance web developer | On average €73 an hour, excluding VAT. | Knab Zzp Uurtarievenboekje 2026 |
Shopify agency | Usually a project price that depends on the scope: strategy, design, the number of templates, migration, languages and apps. Often these are ecommerce specialists who combine strategy, design and development; for bigger projects with more complex solutions, the price can go above €100,000. | Ask for an itemized quote |
Shopify prices from shopify.com/nl/prijzen, excluding VAT (BTW in Dutch) (checked November 2026). Hourly rates from Knab's Zzp Uurtarievenboekje 2026, based on a survey of more than 20,000 Dutch freelancers, who reported their own rates (checked November 2026). Theme prices from the Shopify Theme Store.
So a freelancer who works 40 hours on your store comes to about €2,900 at the average rate. That's a useful yardstick, because it shows what you're really comparing: an agency quote isn't more hours at a higher rate, it's usually a different scope. If a quote seems high or low, first ask what's in it, and only then ask for a discount. We've listed every other cost of a store in How much does a Shopify store cost in 2026?
Where do you find a Shopify agency in the Netherlands?
You'll probably start with Google, and that's fine. But the best places to look are the ones where you can check the work, not only read about it.
Stores you like. Open the Shopify stores you admire and scroll to the footer. Many stores name the agency that built them there. A shortlist doesn't get more honest than this, because you've already seen the result as a customer.
The Shopify Partner Directory. Shopify's own list of agencies and freelancers. You can filter by country, services, industry, languages, price range and whether they take new clients, and you can sort by rating. Keep in mind that the final project price with a Shopify agency goes up further when you need more complex solutions, like custom work or several markets.
Google reviews. Search the agency's name and read the reviews, the low ones too. Look at how the agency replied.
Review sites like Clutch. Useful for comparing agencies, as long as you check how many reviews there are and how recent they are. Awards can be an extra signal of recognition in the market, but never more important than work you can see and relevant experience.
Other business owners. Ask people whose stores you trust who built them, and whether they would hire that agency again. That last question tells you more than the first.
Shopify Partner, Plus Partner, Shopify Expert: what do the labels mean?
Anyone who builds stores for others can become a Shopify Partner. So "Shopify Partner" on a website tells you that someone works with Shopify, not how good the work is. The Partner Directory does sort partners into tiers, and the tier mostly tells you what size of business they usually work with:
Tier in the Partner Directory | Who it's meant for, according to Shopify |
|---|---|
Select Partners | Businesses up to medium size |
Plus Partners | Mid-market and larger businesses |
Premier Partners | Large enterprises |
Platinum Partners | Large international enterprises |
Tiers and review rules from the Shopify Help Center (checked November 2026). A review on a partner's profile can only come from a business owner who gave that partner collaborator access to their store, and only after they've worked together for more than a week.
That last rule is why the reviews in the Partner Directory are worth reading: they come from real stores. A Plus or Premier agency isn't automatically better for a growing brand, though. Agencies like that are often set up for bigger budgets and bigger teams on your side. For a brand that's just starting, a partner who works with businesses your size is sometimes the better fit.
Seven things to look at before you choose a Shopify agency
Once you have three names, this is what I'd look at, in this order.
Live stores like yours. Not screenshots in a portfolio, but stores you can open today. Do they sell products that need as much explaining as yours? Someone buying jewelry has very different questions from someone buying skincare.
Open them on your phone. That's where your customers will shop. Put something in your cart, read a product page, find the delivery and returns information. Does it feel easy?
Who does the thinking. Ask what happens before the design starts. An agency that goes straight to designing the homepage skips the part that decides whether your store sells.
Who you actually talk to. The person in the sales call isn't always the person doing the work. Ask who will design your store, and who you can call when something is unclear.
What's in the quote. The number of page templates, the feedback rounds, migration, apps, training, support after launch. If it isn't in there, assume it isn't included.
Who owns what. The store, the theme, the domain and every account should be in your name. You should be able to walk away with everything.
What happens after launch. A store isn't finished on the day it goes live. Ask how they deal with problems in the first weeks, and whether they can help you keep improving it after that.
Example: zourani.com, a store we designed. Look at an agency's work the way a customer does: on a phone. On the Zourani product page, right under the button: delivery, the guarantee, 30 days to change your mind and safe payment. Details like these tell you whether the agency thought about the shopper, or only about how the store looks.
What questions should you ask a Shopify agency before you hire them?
Take these questions to every intro call, and write down the answers. You'll quickly notice which answers are clear and which ones stay vague.
What happens before you start designing, and what do I get from that part?
Which of your live stores is closest to what I need, and why?
Who will work on my store, and who is my contact? Does that ideally start with an analysis of my store, market or customers, and how does a data-driven approach then support the design choices? Which use of the store or customer data do you look at to see how real visitors behave?
Do you start from a theme, or design from scratch? Which theme, and why?
What's included in the price, and what costs extra?
How many feedback rounds are included?
How do you move my products, customers and Google rankings over from my old platform?
Will the store, the theme and the domain be in my name?
Which apps will I pay for every month, and what do they cost?
What happens in the first weeks after launch, and after that?
Can I speak to one of your clients?
There's no wrong answer to most of these questions. What you're listening for is whether they'd thought about it before you asked.
Red flags when choosing a Shopify agency or ecommerce agency
They ask for your password. On Shopify, agencies and freelancers request a collaborator account, which you approve and can remove at any time. There's no reason to share your login details. Also ask whether they use a data-driven approach to support their choices before and after launch; be wary of anyone who promises to achieve more revenue quickly without researching anything first.
They want to create the store in their own account and "hand it over later", without explaining how. Shopify has a proper way to transfer a store that a partner set up, after which the client becomes the owner. Ask how they do it, and when.
The quote is one line. "Shopify store, €X" tells you nothing about what you'll get.
No live stores to show, only mockups or screenshots.
A promise about numbers before they've seen your store, your customers or your visitor numbers.
A lot of apps from day one. Every app adds a monthly cost and some weight to your store. Ask why each app is needed.
Choosing a Shopify agency in the Netherlands
Does the agency need to be in your city? Not really. Most of the work happens in video calls and in shared documents. What matters more is that they understand Dutch shoppers, and that you can reach them during your working hours. Meeting in person once can still be nice, especially at the start.
Good to know in the Netherlands
Look the agency up in the KVK Handelsregister, so you know the business is registered and who is behind it. Quotes from freelancers and agencies are usually excluding VAT, so add 21% if you can't deduct it. Read the terms and conditions (algemene voorwaarden) before you sign, especially what they say about ownership and payment. And check that whoever builds your store knows what a Dutch store needs: iDEAL at checkout, prices including VAT, your KVK number on the site and 14 days for your customers to change their mind.
Selling from Belgium? There the register is the KBO (Kruispuntbank van Ondernemingen), and Bancontact matters there as much as iDEAL does here.
Already have quotes on the table? Go through them one by one with the checklist below, ours included.
What the wrong choice really costs
We decide what the store must say before we decide how it looks.
The wrong choice costs more than the invoice. It's the months your store is live and not selling, the second agency you hire to fix it, and the customers who left and didn't come back. That's why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest store, and the most expensive one isn't automatically the best. Choose the agency that asks the most questions about your customers.
Who we are and what we do
We're Design by Karina, a boutique Shopify agency in Rotterdam, working with brands worldwide. We design and build strategy-led Shopify stores for ambitious fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands. With brand strategy, UX and thoughtful design, we create shopping experiences that don't only look good, but also bring more clarity and sales and take your store to the next level.
Ecommerce marketing and strategy
Who are your customers, what do they want to know and what helps them choose your brand? We define the positioning, the customer journey and the channels through which you reach your audience before the design starts. Social media can be a logical part of that.
Shopify design
A store should feel unmistakably yours and work intuitively. We design Shopify stores around your brand, from the homepage to the product pages, and always mobile first.
Shopify development and migration
From a custom Shopify theme to migrating an existing store. Coming from WooCommerce or another platform? Then we help you with a clear plan for your store, your content, your customers' experience and the connections with external systems that many stores need to work. Fixed choices for imagery and layout help your store feel consistent and professional, give your team a solid base to work out new products faster, and help brands with scalable content grow faster when new products are added later, while your visibility is kept during and after the migration.
Conversion optimization and customer retention
What customers need to see, understand and feel before they choose, from product pages to the emails after the purchase: customer retention and conversion rate optimization increase stores' revenue. It's about what customers need to see at the right moments to get more conversions and make their choice easier. Email marketing after the purchase can be part of that.
Growth after launch
We look at how real visitors use your store and improve, step by step, what makes the biggest difference, with advanced data analysis helping to increase sales significantly.
With regular updates, you see how the performance develops.
Seamless integration of sales channels also helps increase customer satisfaction.

Why business owners choose us as their Shopify agency
Strategy before pixels. Before we open a design file, we want to understand who buys from you and what those people need to see first.
A background in product design. Before starting Design by Karina, I worked in product design at Uber, helping shape payment experiences for drivers.
Fewer projects, more care. We work on a limited number of projects at a time, so I'm closely involved in every one.
We say it straight. If a freelancer or doing it yourself fits you better right now, we'll tell you.
Launch is the starting line. After launch, we keep improving your store based on what real visitors do.
See the stores we've built for Zourani (one store in Dutch, French and English, for the Netherlands and Belgium), VYOLA (custom-made body jewelry, with size guidance and a considered ordering flow) and Thereza Pedrosa Gallery (art jewelry, organized around the artists instead of product categories).
What does a Shopify store cost with us?
How we work | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|
The Launch | €4,500 | Your first proper store, with your brand applied to a proven Shopify theme |
The Atelier | €6,900 | An established brand that wants a store designed for that brand, not a template with a logo on it |
Bespoke | €9,500 | Larger stores with several languages or markets, subscriptions, B2B pricing or a big catalog |
Growth Plan | €590 a month | A store that's already live. Every month we pick the improvement that makes the biggest difference, make it and show you what it brought. At least three months. |
The Launch includes a strategy session and a written project brief, a sitemap you approve before the design starts, the homepage, product, collection, About and Contact pages, payments, shipping and the essential settings of your store, and a handover with training and 30 days of support. You'll see every item in your quote before we start.
If you're moving to Shopify from another platform, the migration comes as an add-on in your quote.
Choosing a Shopify agency: the short version
First decide whether you need an agency, a freelancer or your own evenings. Shortlist three Shopify agencies whose live stores look like what you want, and look at them on your phone. Compare quotes item by item, ask who does the thinking before the design starts, and make sure the store and every account are in your name. Read the reviews in the Shopify Partner Directory and on Google, look the business up in the KVK Handelsregister, and choose the agency that asks the most questions about your customers.
What we see with clients
When business owners come to us after a store that didn't work out, the problem is rarely in the code. The problem is that nobody asked who the store was for before it was designed. So it looks fine, and still doesn't say why someone should buy. That's the part we spend the most time on at the start, and it's also the part I'd ask every agency about.

Questions
How do I choose a Shopify agency or ecommerce agency?
Shortlist three agencies whose live stores look like the store you want. Look at those stores on your phone, ask each agency what happens before the design starts and what's in the quote, and read their reviews in the Shopify Partner Directory and on Google. Then choose the agency that understood your customers best, not only the one with the lowest price.
Shopify agency or freelancer: which is better?
Neither is better for everyone. A freelancer fits when you know what you want and need someone skilled to build it. An agency fits when you want strategy, design, development and care after launch in one place, or when the project includes a migration, several languages or custom features.
What does a Shopify agency cost in the Netherlands?
Agencies usually work with a project price that depends on the scope. With us, a store starts at €4,500 with The Launch, and a store designed for your brand at €6,900 with The Atelier. Always ask for an itemized quote, so you can put it next to other quotes.
What does a Shopify freelancer charge per hour in the Netherlands?
Freelance designers in the Netherlands charge on average €72 an hour and freelance web developers €73, excluding VAT, according to Knab's Zzp Uurtarievenboekje 2026. Starting designers charge about €61.
What is a Shopify Partner?
A Shopify Partner is an agency or freelancer registered with Shopify to build stores, themes or apps for others. Being a partner doesn't mean Shopify has checked the quality of the work. The tiers in the Partner Directory (Select, Plus, Premier, Platinum) mostly say what size of business a partner usually works with.
What is the difference between a Shopify Partner and a Shopify Plus Partner?
In the Partner Directory, Select Partners are meant for businesses up to medium size, and Plus Partners for mid-market and larger businesses. A Plus Partner isn't automatically the better choice for a growing brand, because agencies like that are often set up for bigger budgets.
What questions should I ask a Shopify agency before I hire them?
Ask what happens before the design starts, which of their live stores is closest to yours, who does the work, what's included in the price, how they handle a migration and your Google rankings, whether the store will be in your name, and what happens after launch.
Who owns my Shopify store if an agency builds it?
You do, if it's done right. The store, the theme, the domain and every account should be in your name. If the agency first sets up the store in its partner account, it can transfer it to you through Shopify, and after that transfer you're the owner. Put this in writing before you start.
Should I give my Shopify agency my password?
No. The agency requests access with a collaborator account, which you or an administrator approve. You decide which parts of the store they can see, and you can remove the access at any time. Collaborators don't count towards your plan's maximum number of users.
Does my Shopify agency need to be in my city?
No. Most of the work happens in video calls and shared documents, so an agency in another city or another country can work just as well. What matters is that they understand Dutch shoppers and payment methods, and that you can reach them during your working hours.
Can I build my Shopify store myself?
Yes. Shopify is built so a business owner can start alone, with a theme, products and payments. That works best when your budget is tight and you have the time. Before you launch, ask someone you trust to shop in your store on a phone and tell you what's unclear.
What is the best Shopify agency in the Netherlands, or in Rotterdam?
There isn't one best agency, because it depends on what you need: some agencies are strongest in development, others in design, marketing or big Shopify Plus projects. We're one of the options: Design by Karina is a boutique Shopify agency in Rotterdam that starts with your brand strategy, before the design. Compare a few, and choose the agency whose live stores are closest to yours.
