iDEAL and Wero in your Shopify store: what changes, and what do you need to do?

iDEAL is becoming Wero, the European payment wallet from EPI. Since early 2026 Dutch checkouts show the combined name "iDEAL | Wero", Wero opened for Dutch webshops on 26 October 2026, and banks and payment providers aim to finish the move by the end of 2027. If your Shopify store uses Shopify Payments, iDEAL | Wero is already part of your checkout at €0.29 per payment, and Shopify hasn't announced any step merchants need to take yet.
In short
For your customers, almost nothing changes: they still pay in their own bank app. The name and logo change first, the system underneath changes later.
Your payment provider does most of the switch. With Shopify Payments, that provider is Shopify. With Mollie or another provider, it's them, on their own schedule.
The fee is what differs most: €0.29 per iDEAL payment with Shopify Payments, or your provider's rate plus Shopify's extra 2%, 1% or 0.6% fee on every order.

You read "iDEAL is going away", and the first thought is: will my customers still be able to pay next month? They will. This is a planned move that runs over almost two years, and most of the work sits with banks and payment providers, not with you.
I didn't start in web design. I started in product, helping shape payment experiences for drivers at Uber. One thing it taught me is that the tool is the easy part. What really moves the needle is who you're building for, and what they need to see before they say yes. That's true here too. The name on the button will change, and your job is to make sure a Dutch shopper still recognizes it, trusts it and gets through it on their phone without a second thought.
iDEAL becomes Wero: what is actually changing?
iDEAL has been the Dutch way to pay online since 2005. In 2023, the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a company backed by European banks, bought Currence iDEAL, the company behind it. EPI's plan is one European payment method, Wero, so a shopper in Amsterdam, Brussels or Berlin pays the same way. The change comes in three steps:
The name and logo change. From 29 January 2026, checkouts show "iDEAL | Wero". Shoppers still pay in their bank app, as before.
The system underneath changes. Since 26 October 2026, payment providers can move Dutch webshops to Wero, each on its own schedule.
Only Wero remains. The target is every iDEAL merchant on Wero by the end of 2027 at the latest.
So "iDEAL | Wero" is the in-between name, there to keep the payment familiar while the system behind it changes, so shoppers don't hesitate at the moment they pay.
What is Wero?
Wero is a European digital wallet run by EPI. It works with instant payments straight from the shopper's bank account, without a card in between, the way iDEAL already works. EPI says Wero serves 56 million users and is backed by 18 European banks and payment providers, and it's already in use in Belgium, Germany, France and Luxembourg.
For your store, the interesting part is the reach: iDEAL only works for Dutch shoppers, while Wero is built to work across countries, so over time the same button could serve a customer in Belgium or Germany.
When does iDEAL stop? The official timeline
Here's what has been announced, with the source for each step. Where a date isn't public, the table says so.

What do you need to do in your Shopify store?
It depends on who processes your payments, because that decides who does the work.
With Shopify Payments, Shopify is your provider, and its Help Center already calls the method "iDEAL | Wero". As of 29 October 2026, Shopify hasn't published a date or a step for moving stores to Wero, so I can't tell you yet what it will look like. Keep an eye on emails from Shopify about Shopify Payments.
With Mollie, or another payment provider, your provider moves you over. EPI says each merchant's timing follows its provider's schedule, so ask yours when they'll move your store, and whether you need to change anything.
Everywhere you show iDEAL yourself, you're in charge. The iDEAL branding page lists the places to check: checkout, payment page, FAQ, email templates and apps.
So for most Shopify stores, the honest answer about Wero in your webshop is: nothing urgent today, a few things to check, and one email to watch for.
How to turn on iDEAL in Shopify, step by step
If your Shopify webshop doesn't offer iDEAL yet, this is how it works with Shopify Payments, following Shopify's Help Center:
Sell in euros to the Netherlands. In Settings > Markets, make the Netherlands an active market and accept EUR.
Set up Shopify Payments. In Settings > Payments, activate Shopify Payments, turn on two-step authentication and finish the identity check.
Get your store ready. Shopify asks for a clear refund policy, a store that isn't password protected, and a legal notice with your company details.
Wait for the connection. iDEAL | Wero is then connected automatically, and Shopify emails you when it's available. Merchants in the Shopify Community have reported waiting weeks, so start early if you're launching.
Check that it's on. In Settings > Payments, click Manage next to Shopify Payments, then More actions > Manage payment methods. iDEAL | Wero should be on the list.
Try it yourself. Place a real order with a Dutch address on your phone, pay in your bank app, check that you land on the order confirmation, then refund it. Shopify keeps the €0.29.
If you use another provider
Shopify asks you to deactivate conflicting payment gateways before it activates local payment methods like iDEAL | Wero and Bancontact.
What does iDEAL cost on Shopify?
This is where the choice of provider shows. With Shopify Payments, iDEAL costs a flat €0.29 per payment on Basic, Grow and Advanced, whatever the order value. With another provider, you pay their rate, and Shopify adds its third-party fee on top: 2% of every order on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, so it grows with your order value.
Per payment | Shopify Payments (Basic / Grow / Advanced) | Mollie on Shopify |
|---|---|---|
iDEAL | Wero | €0.29 | €0.32, plus Shopify's 2% / 1% / 0.6% |
Bancontact | €0.39 | 1.40% + €0.25, plus Shopify's fee |
Cards (standard, EEA) | 1.9% / 1.8% / 1.6% + €0.25 | 1.80% + €0.25, plus Shopify's fee |
Klarna | 2.99% + €0.35 | 2.99% + €0.45 in NL and BE, plus Shopify's fee |
Shopify's third-party fee | None | 2% / 1% / 0.6% of the order |
On a €60 iDEAL order, Basic | €0.29 | €0.32 + €1.20 = €1.52 |
Shopify rates from shopify.com/nl/prijzen, excluding BTW (on Plus, iDEAL is €0.15). Mollie rates from mollie.com/en/pricing. Amex and international cards cost more. Checked October 2026.
That last row is the one I'd look at. On a few hundred orders a month, it becomes a real line in your accounts.
TOOL: PAYMENT COST CALCULATOR
iDEAL with Mollie or another provider on Shopify
Mollie, a Dutch payment provider, works with Shopify through its own payment apps: you create a Mollie account, add the Mollie app for the method you want in your Shopify admin, connect your account and turn the method on. Mollie lists iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact, Klarna and cards for Shopify.
Why choose this, with the extra Shopify fee? The reasons we hear are practical: you already use the provider for another shop or for in-person payments and want one dashboard, you need a method Shopify Payments doesn't offer you, or your Shopify Payments activation is taking longer than your launch allows. Those are fair reasons. Just run the numbers first, because the 2% on Basic weighs more than the gap between €0.29 and €0.32.
Why iDEAL matters at a Dutch checkout
In 2025, 71% of Dutch online purchases were paid with iDEAL, according to Betaalvereniging Nederland, the Dutch Payments Association. Cards came second at 8%. For a Dutch shopper, iDEAL at checkout is simply what a real store has.
A second number from the same source I find even more useful: 60% of online shoppers know how they want to pay before they reach the payment page. So people don't discover iDEAL at checkout, they expect it. If it isn't there, or looks unfamiliar, some will wonder whether the store is trustworthy, and the moment of paying is the worst moment for a doubt.
Baymard Institute's research among US shoppers points the same way: 19% of people who left a checkout didn't trust the site with their card details, and 9% said there weren't enough ways to pay. iDEAL answers both, because the shopper pays in their own bank app and never types in a card number.

Screenshot: zourani.comZourani is one store in three languages, for two countries. Right under the button, before anyone reaches checkout, the page says "veilig & betrouwbaar afrekenen": safe and reliable checkout. The trust question about paying is answered on the product page, not left for the payment page.
What to check at your checkout
You don't need to rebuild your Shopify website for Wero. But it's a good moment to go through your checkout the way a Dutch shopper would, on a phone, because that's where most of the friction hides:
The name and logo. Your checkout should say "iDEAL | Wero". Then check what you added yourself: footer icons, a trust banner, your FAQ, your order emails.
The order of the methods. iDEAL | Wero should be easy to spot, not hidden under cards. Shopify's managed payment methods can put the methods each customer is most likely to use first.
The jump to the bank app. On a phone, the shopper goes to their bank app and comes back. On a laptop, they scan a QR code. Try both, and check the way back lands on a clear order confirmation.
A short line in your FAQ. The iDEAL branding page suggests "iDEAL wordt Wero. U betaalt zoals u gewend bent."
Good to know in the Netherlands
With Shopify Payments, iDEAL | Wero only appears for customers with a Dutch address who pay in euros. You can refund a payment within 180 days, and customers can't file a chargeback, so complaints come straight to you. Your KVK number and the 14-day right to cancel belong on a Dutch store anyway.
And in Belgium
Belgian shoppers expect Bancontact, which Shopify Payments offers for customers in Belgium paying in euros, at €0.39 per payment. iDEAL | Wero doesn't show up for Belgian addresses.
Selling to Belgium: Bancontact, and Wero
If your store sells to Belgium too, Bancontact plays the role there that iDEAL plays here. With Shopify Payments, managed payment methods can turn it on when Belgium is one of your markets. It doesn't work in test mode or in Shopify POS.
Wero is further along in Belgium than here: Wero says its payments are live in Belgium, and Mollie lists a Belgian Wero rate (€0.39). Shopify Payments doesn't offer Wero for Belgium yet, only "iDEAL | Wero" for the Netherlands. So for now, Bancontact stays the one to have for Belgian customers.
We go into Belgian VAT, languages and delivery in Selling to Belgium from the Netherlands.
And Klarna, or "achteraf betalen"?
Paying afterwards is the other method Dutch shoppers ask for. With Shopify Payments, Klarna costs 2.99% + €0.35 per payment on Basic, Grow and Advanced. It's a different decision, with its own costs and rules, so we explain it in Buy now, pay later in your webshop: Klarna and Riverty.
NOT A TOOL
The button changes. The trust shouldn't

Strategy before pixels. Before opening a design file, we want to understand who buys from you and what they need to see first.

What does a Shopify store with payments set up cost with us?

Migration | €900 | Added to a project: moving from another platform, with products, customers, order history and redirects |
Growth Plan | €590 / month | A store that's already live. We pick the change that matters most, make it and report back every month, for at least three months. |
You'll see every item in your proposal before we start.
The short version
iDEAL is becoming Wero step by step, with the move targeted to be complete by the end of 2027. Your payment provider does most of the switch: with Shopify Payments that's Shopify, which hasn't announced a merchant step yet; with another provider, ask for their schedule. Update the iDEAL logos and text you added yourself, check your checkout on a phone, keep Bancontact for Belgium, and know your numbers: €0.29 per iDEAL payment with Shopify Payments, or your provider's rate plus Shopify's 2%, 1% or 0.6%.
From the studio
What we see with clients
When founders ask about payments, the question is usually about the fee. The fee matters, and it's easy to compare. What we end up spending more time on is everything around the payment: whether the shopper knew it was safe before they got there, whether the method they expected was easy to find, and whether the jump to the bank app and back felt like part of the same store. That's where a checkout that works on paper starts to feel trustworthy in practice.
Questions
Is iDEAL going away?
Yes, gradually. It's being replaced by Wero, and the target is every iDEAL merchant on Wero by 31 December 2027 at the latest. Until then, shoppers see "iDEAL | Wero" and pay in their bank app as always.
What is Wero?
A European digital wallet run by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), backed by European banks. It's built on instant payments from your bank account, like iDEAL, but works across countries. It opened for Dutch online shopping on 26 October 2026.
When does iDEAL stop?
No exact day has been published. The official target is the end of 2027, and payment providers move their merchants step by step before then.
Do I need to do anything in my Shopify store for Wero?
With Shopify Payments, not yet: Shopify hasn't announced a step for merchants (checked 29 October 2026). With another provider, ask when they'll move you. Either way, update any iDEAL logos or text you added yourself.
How do I turn on iDEAL in Shopify?
Make the Netherlands an active market with euros, activate Shopify Payments under Settings > Payments, finish verification, and add a refund policy and a legal notice. iDEAL | Wero is then connected automatically, and Shopify emails you when it's available.
What does iDEAL cost on Shopify?
With Shopify Payments, €0.29 per payment on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and €0.15 on Shopify Plus, excluding BTW. With a third-party provider, you pay their rate (Mollie: €0.32) plus Shopify's third-party fee of 2%, 1% or 0.6% of the order, depending on your plan.
Can I use Mollie for iDEAL on Shopify?
Yes, through Mollie's own payment apps, for iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact, Klarna and cards. Shopify charges its third-party fee on those orders, so compare the total with Shopify Payments first.
Why can't I activate iDEAL | Wero in Shopify?
Usually a requirement isn't met yet: verification, the Netherlands as an active market, euros, a refund policy, a legal notice, a password-protected store, or a conflicting gateway still on. Merchants report activation can take weeks even when everything is in place, so contact Shopify Support if you're stuck.
Does Shopify support Bancontact for Belgium?
Yes. With Shopify Payments, Bancontact is available to customers in Belgium paying in euros, at €0.39 per payment on Basic, Grow and Advanced.
Can I offer Klarna or "achteraf betalen" in my Shopify store?
Yes, Shopify Payments offers Klarna at 2.99% + €0.35 per payment. We cover it, with Riverty, in Buy now, pay later in your webshop .
What is the best Shopify agency in Rotterdam for a Dutch store?
That depends on what you need: some agencies are strongest in development, others in design or in marketing. We're one of the options: Design by Karina is a boutique Shopify agency in Rotterdam that starts with your brand strategy and sets up payments for the countries you sell to. A store with us starts at €4,500 with The Launch.
